Five reasons why Julia Fox is our 2022 It Girl

What is an It Girl? Like you probably could've guessed, It Girl originated from high-class British society describing a young woman who was popular and expressed her sexuality (simply meaning everyone either wanted to be her, or be with her). Like with every other term, we took it, ran with it, and elevated the meaning. When people hear It Girl, icons like Paris Hilton come to mind. Paparazzi shots of Paris leaving clubs with her girl squad in tow are ingrained in every millennial’s brain, truly unforgettable. But what does our modern day It Girl look like?

Although she isn’t technically new on the scene, it’s no secret that Julia Fox has been making waves across social media and general word of mouth. Dare I say that she is our 2022 It Girl? Let’s look at the facts. Here’s five reasons why Julia Fox is 2022’s It Girl.

1. She's Newsworthy

Whether it was a PR stunt or true romance, Fox’s relationship with recently divorced, Kanye 'Ye' West was the height of news at the beginning of 2022. When Interview Magazine posted those steamy PDA-filled pictures, I think the internet may have broken for a minute. When you have social media detectives scrambling to find out who you are and what you are doing next, you know you are doing something right. Every It Girl needs to have all eyes on her and this performance definitely got people talking.

2. She's Different

Julia Fox is definitely not your average celeb, or It Girl for that matter. If Kath and Kim were to describe her I’m sure they would say, “nice, different, unusual” because let’s face it, she is a bit unusual but that’s what makes her so interesting. From her over-exaggerated eye makeup to her pronunciation of Uncut Gems (AKA Uncah Jamz), Fox has shown us that her kooky side is something she isn't afraid of. Along with her light-hearted response to all the Uncah Jamz memes, she has also proven what a good sport she is.

3. She's Relatable

Your classic It Girl thrives on the fact that her life is unobtainable, like Regina from Mean Girls. Even though Julia Fox obviously lives the high life (pun intended), her transparency makes her so likeable and different to the original It Girl criteria. Her "Fox Eye" tutorial posted on her Instagram was so unintentionally comedic, I and many others have definitely said "I'm DONE" with our makeup when it hasn't gone our way, only to come back to it seconds later. The fact that she even does her own makeup for events is so refreshing to see. It is true an angel gets its wings every time a celebrity is relatable without trying too hard, so we can thank Julia Fox for all the angels in Heaven. Julia is also not shy of partaking in a bit of weed smoking which she made evident by blaming her pronunciation of Uncut Gems on the fact she was high. Classic.

4. She's Talented

In the past, It Girls have been branded as famous for being famous. Even if Julia was famous for being famous, this would still be her moment. However, Julia Fox does have a long list of accomplishments that need to be appreciated. Prior to her role in Uncut Gems, Fox designed a clothing line Franziska Fox and the clothes actually rocked. Nepotism favourites such as Kylie Jenner and Rumer Willis were the faces of the brand but unfortunately, the brand is no longer. Fox has also dabbled in modelling, most notably she posed for Playboy in 2015 and recently made her debut at New York Fashion Week opening for American designer, LaQuan Smith. Fox has published two books of photography and hosted art exhibitions of her work titled "R.I.P. Julia Fox". She also wrote and directed a short film called Fantasy Girls which was released in 2021. And if that isn’t enough to prove her talent, I think her innovative and campy sense of fashion speaks for itself. What can’t Julia Fox do?

5. She's Down to Earth

The way Julia Fox speaks, acts, and lives scream REAL. The reason people get so fed up with celebrities is because they lack transparency. You can literally see the cogs working in their brains as they try to remember their media training. With Fox, this is not the case. Her iconic quote during her "Fox Eye" tutorial, "I am putting [foundation] on directly with my fingers, because it is really not that serious" speaks to me deeply, I aspire to be that chilled about day-to-day tasks. And overall, her mic-drop moment of "I have always been somebody's muse" lives in my brain rent-free. Fox truly displays the kind of qualities that all It Girls should aspire to have. Unapologetic, confident, real. You name it.

Julia Fox is one of a kind and is clearly living her best life. Everything she does is iconic and will be remembered as an important part of pop culture history. We should all be prepared to see many interpretations of her looks this Halloween, I might need to invest in some leather and black eyeshadow as well. So, with my (probably biased) opinion... I dub thee Julia Fox as our 2022 It Girl.
